Kids are sponges. They soak up information from everywhere. With all the reading, watching, and sucking up of stuff that they do, it's no wonder their little heads don't explode.
In an effort to release some of the brain pressure, my oldest recently asked me, "Mom...do you think today I could teach us all something?"
Hmmmschooler Iggy decided that he needed to teach a class on Creating Characters. Iggy is all about drawing comics and he thought his brother and mother needed to expand that part of their brain.
We agreed.

The thing about watching your kid teach you is that it teaches you so much about them. How they learn. How they listen. How they soak things in. And how they want to be taught.
It gives them power. It helps them feel the things they know are important. It gives them a sense that the things they are smart about have value.
And those are some great lessons to learn. :)
Well, I'd love to stay and chat but I've got to go. Hmmmschooler Ooky has informed me he will be teaching "How To Write A Song" in just a little bit...and I don't want to be late for class. :)

Awesome! And they get so excited about teaching someone else, especially if it's an adult. I readily admit that all my kids have knowledge in certain areas that I don't and they share with me. I know some say not to admit that you don't know, but why not? No one can know everything, right? The important thing is you continue to learn!
ReplyDeleteI don't think there is anything wrong with admitting you don't know something, because it makes it easier for the kids to realize THEY aren't supposed to know everything. I remember growing up thinking the adults in my life knew everything and that somehow I was supposed to attain that information -and that was stressful. I think there are huge lessons in admitting you don't know everything, and pointing out that everyone knows something and can teach you about it. :)
DeleteChris @ Interest-Led Learning - This is awesome! It's so great when we show our kids that we respect their knowledge and they they have things of importance they can teach us, too. I bet Alexa would like to do something like this.
ReplyDeleteIt's really been huge at our house...the boys really look forward to it. And I have learned so much about both of them through their teaching, it's really helped my in understanding how THEY learn. It's been great!
DeleteI know what a great songwriter Hmmmschooler Ooky is so it was sure to be a great class. What part of the house did you sing these songs in? :)
ReplyDeleteThe music class was more instrumental than lyrical, which was great since...well...you know. :) And the jam session was in the basement. Thank goodness.
DeleteWhat a great idea! I bet it was lots of fun :) You've got me thinking about what I can ask my girls to teach me!
ReplyDeleteAsk them...I'm sure they have lots of ideas. Yesterday my oldest taught a half hour of computer programming. I had NO idea he knew anything like that. :)
